Ideation

The ideation contest focuses on generating and aggregating pressing U.S. renewable and energy efficiency market needs and problem statements that can be solved through automation, algorithms, data, and software, especially by leveraging available data assets, tools, capabilities, and resources. Anyone can participate by submitting problem statements online or by voting on problem statements submissions from others. A contestant with a problem statement may win $1,000 in cash prizes when a team, who adopted this problem statement in their business solution, has been selected among top five winners by a panel of judges in accordance with the rules of the incubation contest.

Ideation

Solar Insurance

Other than property and casualty insurance, there are very few insurance products for the residential or commercial solar market to address various risks (system performance, offtaker payment, etc.). We need those products and we need them to be appropriately priced.

Ideation

Yelp for Solar Installers

Jigar Shah recently said (paraphrasing) that that the most profitable solar installers are companies with one or two crews working within a hundred miles of their homebase. Because installing solar is ultimately about boots on roofs, we need a better system for homeowners to evaluate the quality of the install crews. A 'yelp for solar' would provide homeowners with exactly that data, and give them a place to grow ...more »

Solar Exchange Website

As a potential customer considering PV, I would like to be able to go to a website that provides me with personalized information regarding local installers, PV system options (modules, inverters), expected yield, costs, return on investment, and issues. I envision an interactive Google (or other web-based) map that allows me to locate my house, outline the footprint of my proposed system, and the website/tool would ...more »

Ideation

Inconsistency between demand and supply

The energy generated by solar panels is heavily dependent on what time of the day the energy being generated. Certainly during the day time, more energy can be produced than at night and more energy is produced in summer than in winter. This inconsistency can be handled by having really powerful storage solution and can be a big challenge.

Ideation

Storage "Production" Modeling

With energy storage growing due to decreased costs, there is not an equivalent storage production modeling application. Solar has Helioscope, PVWatts, PVsyst and others. There needs to be an equivalent for commercial energy storage.

Ideation

Tapping Small Commerical Rooftop Solar Potential

Small commericial solar installations have lagged behind residential. One problem we see is the disconnect between "owner" and "occupant" incentives of the commercial spaces, in which the owner would qualify for solar incentives/tax credits but does not pay energy bills, and the occupant pays bills but is not the owner of the structure. Perhaps there is a new financial model that bridges this divide and could capitalize ...more »

Facilitating PV Procurement for the Public Sector

The public sector is a neglected market for PV because it is not the low-hanging fruit that a typical commercial-sited project usually is. Complicated and time-consuming procurement protocols that often involve a competitive bid process increase uncertainty and variability and, consequently, raise costs. How can we help streamline the solar process for a public organization (e.g., state university system) to enable low-cost ...more »

Mortgage+Solar Loans

I purpose the systematic partnership between Mortgage providers and Solar developers to combine mortgage loans with solar loans. The end problem is the lack of a streamlined process so that homes on the market can be sold with a guaranteed solar installation after purchase. Buying a home and moving into it is often hard and makes for a time strapped period for a family. It is unlikely that families would also would ...more »

Customer Review Database

I'd like to see a database of homeowners with solar that would volunteer to talk to about their experience.

Automated Permit Packages

The vast majority of permit packages is boilerplate. There are several design patterns that get used repeatedly. I would like to see a program take a system description in an electronic format and generate single or three line electrical diagrams with a templating system to fill out paper work. Solar ABC's expedited permit process is a good attempt at this, but is overly limited.

Ideation

Explain the ITC to a homeowner with a Paystub calculator

So many homeowners think the solar ITC is too confusing or they stop trying to understand if they can take advantage. With the input of a single paystub, a homeowner should be able to find out how much of a solar tax credit they could use, how to use it and what they need to give to their tax preparer to use it. Create a calculator where a paystub is input. The tool figures out the total withholding that should be ...more »
