Price visibility and Proposal Risk

A number of organizations (data.gov, EIA, EnergyStar) with various government funding levels and large amounts of energy related data are currently collecting and providing that data in various formats. The use of these datasets varies widely throughout a number of industries even by the DOE's American Energy Data Challenge. The problem is mining that useful information correctly in a way that focuses on reducing the ...more »

Permitting, Engineering, Labor. Time & Costs preventing parity.

As a Solar designer and integrator I have found the following obstacles to reducing the costs of Solar PV installations. 1. Required custom design of each site to meet utility production requirements to obtain available incentives. 2. Every utility having it's own rules. 3. Code and utility required structural and electrical engineering. 4. Delays and costs associated with permitting. 5. Labor costs. Aggregated ...more »

Large scale identification of adequate roofs

Large solar companies and utilities entering the residential solar space can have a big impact on adoption. They already have millions of customers, but evaluating the solar potential of each home is time consuming and expensive. A cost effective strategy to map the solar potential for entire cities (also where 3D building data is not available) could have a great impact on soft costs. It would save installers ...more »

The Solar Endowment

US universities are currently in a position to make substantial solar project investments on their campuses and associated properties. With the near nationwide adoption of the Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act, endowment managers are now guided by the first prudent investor rule enacted in statutory law. The law allows endowments to invest in any kind of asset, to pool endowment funds for investment purposes, ...more »

National Database of Solar Equipment is needed

Currently, there is no centralized and quality-controlled database of PV equipment for the industry's reference. The California CEC database has been used as a de-facto standard, but with the CSI incentive sunsetting, this is no longer likely to remain a viable alternative. In addition, it suffers from a lack of quality control. Having a standardized database would ensure that installers, distributers, financiers and ...more »

Customer Acquistion

Finding customers is a huge (and expensive) challenge. The cost of finding someone to purchase solar can cost up to $5000. solutions to quickly find, educate and close new solar customers is desperately needed. The solutions to date have already captured early adopters and new solutions must be created to capture the more skeptical early and late majority.

Installer Down Time

When installing solar it would be great if an installer could optimize the route and location of their installer teams. There is not an application that can take the day's installs and available teams and plot the most efficient way to handle the work. Such an app would reduce fuel and payroll costs. The goal would be to eliminate down time. Down time also occurs during the winter months. It might be possible to fill ...more »

Islandable Grid-Tied PV Systems

I wish there were a tool or product that allowed me to use electricity from my grid-tied PV system when the grid goes down. Currently, if the grid goes down, my PV system also goes down (to prevent injury to utility workers fixing the power outage). Is it possible to easily and cheaply redirect electricity from my grid-tied modules directly to the loads in my home during a power outage while preventing risk to utility ...more »

Automated Microinverter Replacement

I wish there were a way to automatically notify my microinverter manufacturer and have my microinverter replaced without my interaction. Currently, I get an e-mail notifying me that there is a problem with my microinverter. I then have to call my installer, who then contacts the manufacturer, who then sends a replacement inverter. I wish there were a way for the installer to automatically get notified of the issue ...more »

Component cost tracker

While top-down cost trends are great, it would be great to have a more detailed component cost index - down to the specific hardware components (wires, combiner boxes, racking, etc), and specific labor tasks. This would ideally track changes over time, and be broken down for regional differences. The key challenge is finding a way to convince the installers or developers to share this information (since most consider ...more »
